Meet the Team: Jeff

On this month’s Meet the Team feature, we introduce Geoffrey Mogonchi, BitPesa’s Analytics Associate.

Who are you?
My name Geoffrey Mogonchi. I prefer when people call me Jeff. Initially I always felt people confuse me for Jeffrey, then I sought out the meanings and realized both names mean the same thing anyway.

Where did you go to school?
We moved a lot when I was a kid, thus I attended several schools in Kisii and Iten, in Western Kenya. I even joined a boarding school, making it a total of four primary schools! After this, I attended Cardinal Otunga High School then went on to pursue a Diploma in Applied Statistics at Eldoret Polytechnic. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Statistics at Egerton University.

What team are you on?
I was originally a member of the Finance team. As the Finance team grew, and BitPesa had an increasing need for analytics, I transitioned to join the Analytics department. I just love numbers. This puts me in a position in which I am interacting with all departments from customer service to marketing and finance at different times.

How did you become part of BitPesa?
It is very simple. Through Facebook! A month before my contract ended, my former manager posted my qualifications on a Facebook group and BitPesa found me! The position was just right for me.

What does a typical day at the office look like for you?
The first thing I do when I get to the office is check into my Slack and email for requests from team members. I proceed to crunch numbers and post daily transaction volume from the entire BitPesa system to keep the team updated. This is a daily task performed with utmost care, making sure all data is captured and classified accordingly, while liaising with team members where necessary. This exercise enables us to determine volume inflows/outflows in different countries, across different products. I also compile these into periodical reports every month, quarter and so on. Different reports are required during different times, especially when important decisions have to be made. Sales reports. Customer reports. Website analytics. You name it.

Based on the different reports, we are able to understand our customers better, track monthly growth, gauge sales/marketing performance and so much more. All this is done while keeping BitPesa KPIs in mind. What do we need to do based on current data? How is the sales department performing? How much are we spending on marketing? Are the marketing programs effective vis-à-vis spending? The information gathered from data analysis helps in decision making and improvements in strategy.

What tools do you use on a daily basis? Favourites?
Excel. Excel. Excel. At the beginning, Excel was a bit of a stranger to me. I was used to tools like SPSS which are all about statistics. As I went on, I discovered more formulas and better ways of using Excel for accounting purposes in my earlier days in the finance team. I have really learnt a lot. I have delved into macros now. PowerPoint for presentations. Keynote. Word. Basically Microsoft Office. Of course I cannot forget Slack. I also prefer Skype to Google Hangouts for calls.

What sites do you spend most of your time on?
I rarely spend time on one specific website. But I visit a lot of news sites like Business Daily for the latest in the local scene. Work aside, I like keeping up with the world on Facebook.

What is the next skill set you would like to learn or expand upon?
I want to expand my knowledge in Excel macros. In other words, programming. I would also like to polish my presentation skills, especially as it is relevant to reports. Eventually I have my eye on agriculture. Growing that green thumb is my goal. I call it hi-tech farming!

What’s your least favourite thing about Nairobi?
Traffic. Although I would rather say the food. I miss fresh food back at home in Kisii. Food here is also rather expensive. At home, you can just walk outside and get sugarcane right from the garden!

What is the last movie you watched?
It was a Chinese movie, but I can’t remember the name. I love Chinese movies. They stimulate my mind. However, my wife does not like these movies. So sometimes I am forced to watch her romantic flicks. I end up liking them too. I also love movies that involve sports or dancing.

What book are you reading?
Aiyaya! My coursework books. Full stop.

Dream vacation?
(Laughs) My wife really wants to go to Dubai. So I want to go because I am now a family man. Just to see those buildings everyone talks about.

What’s your favourite part of working at BitPesa?
The growth. How we’ve grown. Transaction volumes have grown in leaps and bounds. It’s been a great experience being the person in charge of the numbers, tracking the growth.

What goes on in your life outside of BitPesa?
School. Family, or as I like it to call it, my other work. I look forward to playing with my daughters at the end of the day. I don’t party. It’s simply school and home.

What is your favourite place to hang out in Nairobi?
Home. For reasons I explained in previous question. But I do love hanging out at the Garden City Mall with family.

Where do you want to be in 15 years?
I want to be a grandfather. (Laughs) Okay. Kidding. I want to be in charge of a company. One day I’d actually like to start an export company, collecting and exporting farm produce. Like I said, agriculture is something I want to pursue.

Tell us something fun about you!
I love dancing, but my body won’t let me. My family cracks up when I try to bust a move at home.
