This April, meet Wendy Kwayesa, BitPesa’s Administrative and Human Resources Assistant!

Who are you?
My name is Wendy Kwayesa. I love my second name. It’s very unique. You can’t tell where I come from by my second name. It was my great grandmother’s name.

Where did you go to school?
I attended Visa Oshwal Primary in Nairobi. The school was a mix of culture. I believe that background set me up to be what I am today. High school, on the other hand, was a culture shock. Mukumu Girls High School was all the way in Kakamega, Western Kenya. My dad believed that schools upcountry were a safe bet for his children. After this, I pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management in IT at Kabarak University. Those were some of my best years. I loved the independence that came with it. Trust me when I say I am far much calmer now than I was then. (Laughs) The funny thing is I realized later that what I studied wasn’t me. I only pursued it because I was told it’s marketable. I am now a Certified Human Resources Professional.

What team are you on?
I am in the Administration and Human Resources department. I am interacting with all of BitPesa teams at different times, ensuring the company is running as smoothly as possible.

How did you become part of BitPesa?
I joined BitPesa through a recruitment firm. I was looking for a place where I could follow my HR passion. BitPesa turned to be that place.

What does a typical day at the office look like for you?
My day is never the same or routine, even if I plan ahead. Everyday has different matters that need to be prioritized. I check my email for immediate needs as I am the main contact person for corporate accounts. I make travel arrangements for the BitPesa team which works across multiple timezones. I also help maintain a proper global calendar and coordinate meetings.

I am involved in recruitment, shortlisting candidates, onboarding new employees – all required tasks that come with the HR department. Maintaining a safe and secure work environment is also part of what I love to do. This includes insurance matters for both staff and office equipment. I help out in the legal department when need arises. By the time I am closing, I have planned for the next day. In short, I ensure that the company is running smoothly. When everyone is happy at BitPesa, I am happy.

What tools do you use on a daily basis? Favourites?
Slack is great because you get to talk to teammates scattered across the globe. I use Skype a lot during calls and meetings with various contacts. These tools are essential for communication. Microsoft Excel is another tool I use to record expenses for accounting purposes.

What sites do you spend most of your time on?
I generally spend my time on different sites where I learn more about HR and how to manage people effectively. I want to be better at what I am doing. When I am off work, I am all about fashion blogs. I love fashion!

What is the next skill set you would like to learn or expand upon?
I really want to learn French. I know a French word or two here and there. It’s a song I have been singing but I will eventually get down to it.

What’s your least favourite thing about Nairobi?
The one thing that everyone hates: Traffic. It makes me sick. Sitting in traffic. Ah-ah. I hate it. Makes me want to learn how to ride a motorcycle, but I am too scared about that!

What is the last movie you watched?
Fast and Furious 7. I didn’t join the bandwagon at the beginning when it came out but I loved it watching it recently. I really cried at the end of it. It was such a sad ending.

What book are you reading?
Wah. It’s embarrassing to say. Let’s just say I have tried. The book I got from the office is still lying on my table waiting to be read. White Teeth by Zadie Smith.

Dream vacation?
Lamu. and Watamu. The pictures I have seen of this part of the Kenyan Coast are dreamy! I think I will make it a goal to go this year.

What’s your favourite part of working at BitPesa?
I think every moment is fun. I can’t predict what’s going to happen. I can’t stand being idle and at BitPesa, you’re never idle.

What goes on in your life outside of BitPesa?
I am adventurous. If I am not travelling, I am trying out new dishes. I am always on the go but sometimes I chill out at home.

What is your favourite place to hang out in Nairobi?
There are too many places to mention. If I have to pick one, I’ll have to say Dari Restaurant in Karen. I love the ambience and the animals that come out in the open. It is such a beautiful place.

Where do you want to be in 15 years?
I definitely want to be a mother and a wife. The pressure is real! (Laughs) But honestly, I am doing what I love right now. As much as I have an entrepreneurial spirit in me, I see myself as an HR consultant in the long run.

Tell us something fun about you!
I love travelling and dancing. I am not a very good dancer, but I can bust a move or two.
