We got off to a great start this year by launching BitPesa in Ghana, where we gained traction immediately. It is against this backdrop that our team arrived in Accra this May to see where the action was and meet our customers.
In addition to hosting an event with entrepreneurs and business operators in the capital, we held a VIP cocktail plus fireside chat with our CEO, Elizabeth Rossiello where she shared the BitPesa story with everyone in attendance and demystified Bitcoin. It was a great experience to bring crypto enthusiasts together and listen to their insights and concerns about Bitcoin. The team was on the ground to demo how to buy and sell bitcoins with Cedis in addition to making cross-borders payments in Naira, Ugandan Shillings, Pounds and Euro.
Thank you so much to Impact Hub Accra for hosting us! It’s a super central space with great energy, that definitely brings people together. We also visited Kumasi and interacted with Bitcoin traders who learnt more about BitPesa and how we facilitate bulk trades.
As with any highly volatile financial product, there are going to be people who are trying to take advantage of the opportunities and run scams. We’re not just in Ghana to give our company a good name– but to give Bitcoin a better name. BitPesa using BTC for cross-border payments is a proven case for cryptocurrency increasing speed and efficiency.
One really good proxy for FinTech success is mobile money, and Ghana has always been a forerunner in this area. The corridor between Nigeria and Ghana has a lot potential, and there were many participants who were interested in how they could use BitPesa to make payments between West Africa’s largest economies. BitPesa is a market maker for Ghanaian Cedis, providing an extra tool for customers and partners to integrate into our API and make thousands of payouts straight to local mobile and bank accounts. For example, BitPesa enables Bitbond to collect and disburse loans straight to mobile wallets. We will be releasing more pay-in/pay-out options in Ghana as well, so stay tuned!
